In 1774 and 1775, the Boston Committee of Correspondence and the Massachusetts Committee of Safety entrusted Paul Revere as an express rider—carrying urgent messages, intelligence, and documents as far as New York and Philadelphia.

On the evening of April 18, 1775, Dr. Joseph Warren summoned Revere and sent him toward Lexington with word that British troops were preparing to march. Narrowly avoiding capture outside Charlestown, Revere altered his route, riding through Medford and Menotomy, sounding the alarm house by house—carefully skirting Loyalist estates—until he reached Lexington sometime after midnight.
